red dot error

Posted 07/30/2006 12:16 PM

So I finally saw one of your red dots on your "about Jason" page. When I clicked on it, it took me to my site to a page that said "sorry, this page does not exist on this website." Also, I saw one while browsing on IE on my Lynx page and instead of being a red dot, it made that particular button (the marquee pagbuildr) increase in button height, and the red dot was surrounded by a white rectangle, looking almost like a tiny pic of an ipod with a red dot instead of a screen.

Bad address was a bug that resulted from changes in forum and comment processing. That's fixed.

IE doesn't render transparent PNG files correctly, apparently, so I'll have to change that I suppose.

Any feedback on the dots? This was your idea, btw, based on the PHPBB board we used to use. I figure once a site is "done", ie not being updated much, people would be more apt to surf it if they knew there was new content or comments.

Do we like?

Too busy. It's super cool on discussion forums, but there are red dots all over the place. Something more subtle for buttons would be much better than the red dot, although I like it for the forums.

I know that the red dot image for every location that contains new content is probably easier to pragram. However, I think it should probably be just on the forums for now until there is an idea of what that "subtle" thing is. Perhaps, I don't know how possible this is, there could be a way to make the font thicker or bolder on the buttons that have new content.

That reminds me, when you are browsing someone's site, the red dot doesn't disappear after reading content until you return to their page. I was thinking that maybe there should be a button that says "buildr: main" or something like that so you can go back to their homepage efficiently.  A way to refresh their page if you will. If possible, maybe the user name fills into that button that represents their homepage? Maybe "pbr home" could be removed in favor of the "webmaster's trick ?"

What do you think of some of these ideas? (by the way, any user who is reading this, feel free to chime in)

Actually, the red dots don't disappear until you logout and then log back in.

Hmmm... I like the idea of bolding the text on the button if it's new - that's subtle but would still be an obvious indication of some sort.

It actually took a long time to make the buttons work like the forums.  Major overhaul to the menu files, etc.  However, it'd be quite simple to change the red dot on the button to bold text instead.  I think I'll try it, and let's see if that's any better.

Haven't figured out a good way to make the "new content" notification disapear after you've veiwed the page - hard enough to get the notification to pop up, much less disappear.  I'll add it to the list, though.

The bold looks nice!
