self-evident (Opening: Onset Oblivion)
10/02/2010 10:00 PM
Formed in Minneapolis, MN in 1997, Self-Evident have since developed and applied a unique, intricate, and smart formula to standard rock songwriting, conjuring music that is very resistant to categorization.
Variously described as punk, indie, jazz, post, math, noise, and art-rock, Self-Evident are perhaps more aptly dubbed “transcendental”, encompassing all of these styles and more-often in a single three minute song with a strong melodic sense. The instrumentation is simple: bass/vocals, guitar/vocals, and drums.
Self-evident have played over 600 shows in 23 states with countless bands such as Don Caballero, Oxes, Juno, Chokebore, Local H, Bad Wizard, The Vida Blue (Ten Grand), Life And Times, Houston, Traindodge, Dropsonic, Riddle of Steel, and House Of Large Sizes to name a few.
The summer of 2006 brought the departure of Brian Heitzman, original drummer of 9+ years. Long time pal and superstar Ben Johnston of Clair de Lune immediately came to the rescue and has since brought a new life and approach to the band.
In April of 2009, Self-Evident recorded 15 songs with Carl Amburn at The Mousetrap in Oklahoma City for the completion of their 5th full length album, “ENDINGS”. The upcoming album was released on Doubleplusgood Records of Minneapolis and Stiff Slack Records in Japan in October of 2009.

Cedarwell and Sequioa and The Vigins
10/09/2010 10:00 PM
"I feel honored to present to you the first impressions of Cedarwell’s new album A Stone, A Leaf, A Door. that’s coming out in March 2010; the title is a homage to a novel by Thomas Wolfe. I talked to Erik from the band and he was very easy and nice and so I’m able to let you hear four of the new tracks that will be featured on the upcoming full length. Erik just returned from his HORSES tour in Europe and already has planned to tour Europe again in March 2010 together with band mates Jared on “drums etc.” and Jeff on electronic guitar…and you might have noticed it: it’s the same time the new album comes out and so you’ll be able to purchase it directly from them then.
In one of my first posts here on CFM I wrote about the 2008 release Smoky Mountain Bear by Cedarwell and it was one of the albums that got me started with the whole blogging thing. And now, a couple of months and a good deal of posts, contacts and awesome music later, it’s again Cedarwell that leaves me speechless. They promised, that the new album would sound different - and they managed to sound fresh by simultaneously keeping their own style. I would describe the music somewhere between Brown Bird, Yo La Tengo and The Low Anthem and you can imagine that the result can’t be far away from just being perfect. If you mix the kind of experimental but roots alt country of Brown Bird’s The Devil Dancing and the harder parts of The Low Anthem’s Oh My God, Charlie Darwin together with some Yo La Tengo indie feeling you might get an idea of how complex the new album will sound."

Sequoia and the Virgins, all teenagers, won the Wisconsin Blues Challenge in 2010. They have been drawing big crowds at local festivals and all ages shows. They will be making their Green Room debut this night.

Rue Royale and The Black Atlantic
10/16/2010 10:00 PM
Acclaimed acoustic duo Rue Royale are on the road....again. Brookln and Ruth Dekker have barely stopped for breath since launching their labour of love four years ago.
The Anglo-American pair started performing together in 2006 before taking the full-time touring band plunge in 2008, relocating from Brookln's Chicago hometown to England shortly afterwards.
Now based in the East Midlands, they have played over 350 shows straddling both sides of the pond - taking in festivals, house concerts, club gigs and industry showcases across Europe and the US.
Named after a road running through the Chicago suburbs, Rue Royale's sense of journey is written all over their beguiling music, influenced by the likes of Fleetwood Mac, John Martyn, and the northern UK soul of Doves and Elbow.
They issued their first EP, The Search For Where To Go, in May 2006. An eponymously-titled debut LP followed as 2008 started. Independently released, it included crowd favourites' UFO, Even In The Darkness, Stars and Tell Me When You Go and led to airplay on American radio and MTV plus BBC 6 Music and XFM in the UK.
Rue Royale's homemade album covers were born of necessity after thieves ransacked their car in Holland, stealing their entire CD stock. Armed with a printer and sewing machine, the pair got to work hand-making hundreds of sleeves which have become firm favourites with fans. Still unsigned, the duo have amassed almost half a million plays on MySpace, shifted over 4,000 CDs/vinyl records, and sold thousands of downloads.
As well as being deep into recording a second album in their Nottingham cottage, various 7" projects are lined up and there are whispers of a children's book/recording release.
Meanwhile, Rue Royale are taking their kick drum across Europe (including their first ever Irish shows, with collaborator Paul Pilot) this summer before returning to America for a couple weeks of shows.
Now’s the time to join the journey ...
The Black Atlantic is an acoustic indie pop band from Groningen, the Netherlands. Their music is an introspective and intimate affair of melancholy, folk influenced acoustic pop, relying heavily on vocal harmonies and melody on soft strummed guitars, piano and minimal percussion. The band often uses nature imagery to express their stories on love, death and family. The band has toured in various incarnations around the world (US, EU, UK) and have played with bands such as Nada Surf, Patrick Watson and Saturday Looks Good to Me. They recently finished their debut album, entitled “Reverence for Fallen Trees”, most of which was recorded over the fall of 2008 in a log cabin in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York.
Reverence for Fallen Trees: In February, 2008, The Black Atlantic contacted the international recording project “In a Cabin With” (IACW) about a possible recording session. IACW were immediately enthusiastic and plans for a late 2008 recording, to take place in a log cabin, were made. The cabin, owned by van der Velde’s in-laws is located in the small town of Saranac Lake, in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York. For this recording, drummer Marcel Wolthof was re-enlisted alongside singer-songwriter Kim Janssen on various instruments. Janssen co-wrote some of the songs for the recording and has permanently settled in and joined the band. The title of the album “Reverence for Fallen Trees” is a metaphor for “honour the dead”, referring to van der Velde’s grandparents, 3 of whom passed away recently in the past year. The album deals with such topics as ‘remembrance’ , ‘grief’, ‘family’, ‘love’, ‘disenchantment’ and ‘overcoming’, eloquently worded and brought to life in natural methaphors and direct references to this period in his family history. Musically the new songs showcase a much wider variety of instrumentation and willingness to experiment with sounds and soundscapes, and the use of multi-layered vocal harmonies; inspired by such acts as Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes and the Beach Boys. Rhytmically the group has chosen for a much more minimal, percussive approach touring with only a snare drum, floor tom and cymbal.

"All his experience informs the dusky, vaguely Beckish troubadour's latest CD, which finds him decorating his warm, colourfully detailed Americana narratives with lush strings, skittery beatboxes, noisy textures and experimental sonics. A seamless blend of old and new." Toronto Sun
"In a fair and just world, this sucker would be a career-making album...It all works and often in fascinating ways." Minneapolis Star Tribune
"Weaver delivers a candid and organic album deep-rooted in folk with a wisdom bordering that of Lou Reed. The Ax in the Oak is an uncompromising raw legacy of both turmoil and redemption." The Sentimentalist
"The main benefit of Weaver and Deck’s open-minded approach is the tension generated within many of the songs between Weaver’s traditional sound and the colors brought in by this new instrumentation. All of this might make The Ax in the Oak sound like a stylistic exercise that’s better in theory than in practice, but the album’s actually one of Weaver’s most accessible efforts so far." The Reverend Deadeye is the Reverend’s son of a Reverend’s son. He spent his youth handlin’ snakes and performin’ at tent revivals alongside his Pentecostal family on the Navajo reservation in Arizona. This sacred musical heritage finds its way prominently into his performances. But don’t expect a Sunday mornin’ church service; instead, expect a Saturday night baptism with fire holy rollin’ revival. With his modified wok-lid resonator guitar, homemade beer can microphone, kick drum, and washtub snare, he delivers a punk-rock version of gritty pre-war delta blues which he blends with fiery gospel interpretations capable of turnin’ the whole room into a spirit filled bar room revival.
In the wake of Tom Waits and the slough of bands evoking an old-time spirit, there's Denver's Reverend Deadeye, mixing up his own brew of ministry inspired, soul-saving music. One of the things that impresses me most about Reverend Deadeye is that, for all intents and purposes, he's the real deal. As a missionary kid, he spent most of his youth mingling with Navajos at tent revivals. His performance is less of an "act" than it is a natural manifestation of his real-life experiences. Where others are often just recapturing worlds that they learned about in books or their old Nick Cave albums, The Reverend is telling a real story that he (more or less) lived himself. Now that's something. -apogee magazine
