Old Shoe w/ Brown Baer Music Club
03/06/2010 10:00 PM
Old Shoe is the most recent incarnation of guitarists, singers, songwriters Matt Robinson, Paul Priest, Dan Huber, with Chris Morrow on drums. Matt, Paul, Chris, & Dan came to Chicago in search of ... whatever one seeks in the city, and in addition to that, found that they were the right mix for this newest venture. The music may be roots Americana but not by any premeditated decision: it's just the natural result of four guys who love their country and the music in it. Matt has been sitting on the name Old Shoe for years and found in Dan, Chris, and Paul the reason to bring it forward. Their grooves are like dirt roads through green groves. Try it on...
WLUW CD REVIEW
"..There's a little bit folky Dylan; a little bit Ray Davies (or Hermans Hermits) with a wacky carnival charm. This is their debut and is a very successful ambitious effort from a group of highly enthusiastic talented musicians.." - Di Kulka, WLUW Radio Show Host
CHICAGO RIBFEST 2009
"..A groovy influence to a traditional folk sound, Old Shoe..." - Mark Geary, Chicago Ribfest 2009
MADISON CLEAN LAKES FESTIVAL 2009
"..They are a groovy, hip unit of talented musicians.." - Kristen Block, Madison Clean Lakes Festival 2009

Most five year olds spend their time playing with imaginary friends, Mike Willis however, would put on a pair of headphones and listen to Rolling Stones and Jay Geils records from his older brother's collection. Willis was already singing and playing guitar in his early teens and fronting a local band that was well beyond their years. While in Oshkosh as a college student, Willis put together the Backyard BBQ band, crafting his sassy, riff-a-licous old school rock into his own persona ... the tape still floats out there and is cherished by those who have it.
After several years of touring Colorado as a keyboard player for the Cool Waters band and a few years working on a solo project in Los Angelas, Willis returned to his home town and immediately started to make musical connections that would eventually lead to his current group ... Pink Lipsticks.
Picking up local music verterns Bob Schmidt (Guitar, vocals), Ryan Brown on the kit, and recently adding Bret Smith as the bass player, the Lipsticks have honed in on their own brand of pure rock n' roll that harkens back to an era of packed late 70s NY and British punk clubs, opinion laden-cigarette smokin' record collectors, and field parties centered around the world's biggest bonfire.
Their self titled debut Pink Lipsticks is full of delicious riffs, driving beats, sassy vocals, dirty solos, and attitude. In the modern era where most rock bands lean towards stylings of jam bands, straight up punk rock, southern rock, or blues, the Lipsticks have created their own brand of pure no-strings-attached sassy rock n' roll. This is a record that will be enjoyed by many windows-down-stereo-up-summer-drivers, those at oudoor parties revolving around a keg on ice, and perhaps ... another kid who puts on a big pair of headphones and dreams of being in a rock n' roll band.

Doug Otto and the Getaways perform a blend of old American musical styles. Heavily influenced by delta blues and classic country songs, they cover tunes that range from simple folk songs to heartfelt gospel. Songwriter, Doug Otto, plays acoustic and electric guitars and adds tasteful and authentic harmonica. Lead guitarist Albert Perez brings an edgy yet spacious feel to the music. Chris Gray plays the drums. Shane Akers pulls raw and edgy sounds from an electric lap steel guitar. He switches to the Dobro for more intimate and acoustic tunes. Bassist, Cody McKinney, brings great musical depth, sings gritty leads, and adds tasty vocal harmonies to the mix. Erik Struve holds down the bass lines when Cody is unavailable do to being extremely in demand.

Midwest Dilemma and Jeremiah Nelson Duo
03/27/2010 10:00 PM
MIDWEST DILEMMA – A guitar, red trucker hat, beard, and an old passenger van on open road. Justin Lamoureux has been performing as Midwest Dilemma for nearly a decade. Many know Midwest Dilemma as Omaha based folk-rock ensemble whose debut release Timelines & Tragedies was awarded the title Album Of The Year at the Omaha Entertainment Awards show this year. The album charted CMJ (College Music Journal) Top 200 with college radio play immediately after the release.
Lamoureux enlisted friends, family members, and musical acquaintances to help create the music on Midwest Dilemma's Timelines & Tragedies album. Twenty-three members to be exact. Such instruments as Flute, Clarinet, Tuba, Trombone, Saxophone, Accordion, Cello, Viola, Trumpet, Singing Saw, Upright Bass, Vibraphone, Pedal Steel, Mandolin, Piano, Percussion, and Electric Guitar give the record an orchestral folk and chamber pop sound, similar to Arcade Fire, The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, and Bright Eyes.
Timelines & Tragedies is a time line of family history. Tracing Lamoureux's ancestors to their days of French Canadian fur trading, the Great Depression, the struggles of his parents' generation with Vietnam, and eventually concluding with his life in Sioux City and Omaha. Timelines & Tragedies is the perfect outcome of Midwest Dilemma's vision.
Jeremiah Nelson is recording artist and touring singer-songwriter based in Madison, WI. A few months spent writing and recording music in a South Madison warehouse yielded a dynamic new batch of tunes, ranging from amplified rants to whispery pop songs, which later became the full length release, "Take Me Down the Interstate".
The album is a testament to life on the road, drunken sing-a-longs and hard-earned thinly-spread paychecks. It’s not for the faint hearted but its dog-eared charm should resonate with folks who have been through the ringer a couple times.
