Loyal Opposition

09/06/2009 6:00 PM

The Loyal Opposition, one of Sheboygan’s seminal rock bands, returns to the stage Sunday, September 6 at The Green Room Pub.  This second annual reunion performance will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Reuniting once again are all of the bands original members: Carl Weinberger, guitar and vocals; Rick Gustafson, guitar and vocals; Mike Eubank, bass and vocals; Greg Rakun, keyboards; and Steve Hofschield, drums.

In addition to The Loyal Opposition’s own original material, this historic one-set show will feature songs by The Doors, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Iron Butterfly, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and Traffic.

Formed in the summer of 1967, The Loyal Opposition began as a top-40 cover band with a play list of more than 100 songs.  The band was immediately very popular and had a busy schedule performing at teen dances and bars throughout Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan.  In Sheboygan, the band was a mainstay at the YMCA, Armory, CYO dances, and bars (The Patio, Club 23, The Rendezvous).

The band was very much a product of the late 1960s.  During the course of the bands two-year existence, it gradually developed a heavier, underground sound and became known for its extended, improvised jams.

In early 1969, the band released its only 45-rpm record, Telling Lies, Love Has Come Your Way, both composed by Carl Weinberger.

An August 1969 farewell concert at the Sheboygan Armory (along with The Royals and Elite Society) marked the end of the road for the band.  At the time it disbanded, The Loyal Opposition was at the peak of its popularity and was influential both locally and state-wide.

For the past forty years, all of the bands members have remained musically active, playing in numerous rock bands, dance bands, jazz bands, orchestras, and as solo artists.

Tony Furtado

09/10/2009 8:00 PM

By the age of 19, Furtado had earned himself a reputation as a young banjo prodigy, winning two National Bluegrass Banjo Championships. Despite the press and praise as one of the most promising bluegrass artists, Furtado decided that one genre wasn’t enough for him. Creatively, he had something more to express. “I don’t think I could ever be happy staying in any one place musically,” says Tony Furtado.

Next, Furtado picked up the slide guitar and soon established that his dexterity transitioned with ease. Using fingers and a bottleneck, it wasn’t long before Furtado began writing songs that had a folksier feel and featured himself as the vocalist. Previously he had released banjo albums that featured the vocals of talents such as Allison Krauss and Tim O’Brien. But Tony wanted to add singer to his songwriter and instrumental talents. And, in true Furtado fashion, he accomplished that as well.

From his teenage years until the present, Tony has wandered through genres and styles, never growing static and always evolving musically. He has toured tirelessly for over two decades and has garnered a great deal of respect from his peers, and has opened for and toured with acts such as Greg Allman, Susan Tedeschi, Taj Mahal, Leftover Salmon, Eric Johnson and he has shared the stage with the likes of Sonny Landreth, Keith Richards, David Lindley, Derek Trucks, Norah Jones, among many others. Like his vast catalogue of recordings, a Tony Furtado show has something to offer everyone. His music has taken him all over the country and into the hearts of many a music lover. Whether he’s playing with a band, or recording as a solo artist, his playing and considerable skills as a multi-instrumentalist and his strong songwriting prowess have led to him to be embraced on record and on stage.

Tony is an extremely skilled musician with a riveting voice who blends rock music with elements of Americana, folk, and pop. His musical reach is broad enough to resonate with fans of Ry Cooder, The Band, Bruce Springsteen, CCR, Bela Fleck and Tom Petty, among others. Furtado’s extremely impressive, furious slide guitar skills and 25+ years of banjo experience will blow away the musicos; for the lovers of a story in a song, Furtado has a few tales to tell; and to those who are looking for a performance, get ready to be captivated, charmed, and entertained. And on Deep Water you will find yourself pulled in and drawn under.

The Ragadors

09/12/2009 10:00 PM

The Ragadors burst onto the scene in late 2008 with a surprising collection of material that could only be the product of years of musical frustration, experimentation, and honing. With their high-energy, heavily blues-influenced rock & roll, this quartet based in Milwaukee, WI has been captivating audiences from day one. The Ragadors’ guitar driven, foot-stomping tunes are layered with classic melodies, catchy hooks, and a lyrical maturity that is not often heard from a group of four young punks.

With their infectious blend of rock, grunge & blues,  The Delta Routine is quickly becoming one of Milwaukee’s favorite groups. Embracing the raw elements of guitar driven rock of new and old, singer/songwriter and guitarist Nick Amadeus creates memorable hooks and quirky riffs all while paying homage to the old days of rock ‘n roll.  A strong local following paired with a powerful new album has The Delta Routine on a road to bigger and better things. Montana Skies and Tumbledown House

09/24/2009 8:00 PM

Tumbledown House is a songwriting duo from Bozeman, Montana. Often described as gritty saloon jazz, parlor music inflicted with the unspeakable, or Tom Waits in a cocktail dress, Tumbledown House writes stories that may revolve around shady characters down on their luck, brothels with an eccentric clientele, or a scorned woman out for revenge. These stories are delivered with sultry female vocals reminiscent of a bygone era and placed over rain-soaked indie jazz accompaniment.

Mississippi Cactus

Mississippi Cactus is rock n' roll. Roots based, in your face, loud rock n' roll. Together since 1995, these guys have been doing their thing all over the mid-west and east coast. They are seasoned veterans when it comes time to rock. They take some influence from The Black Crowes and early 70's era Rolling Stones and blend it with a modern touch to create a sound of all their own. Live performances are key to this band. High energy and a general enthusiasm and love for their music is very evident. They have been known to play 4 hour sets with no breaks and still produce enough energy to spend the rest of the night drinking at the bar. They have opened for many major acts Jeff Beck, B.B. King, Medeski Martin and Wood, G-Love and Special Sauce and Rusted Root just to name a few. They even headlined the famed CBGB's in New York....

Ethan Kellar

09/26/2009 10:00 PM

Energetic. Emotional. Enigmatic. Many musicians proclaim originality as their forte, but Ethan Kellers star qualities truly cannot be pigeonholed. Swimming & screaming over dreamy chords produced by fingers that seem to flow over the fret board, his vocals soothe you and shake you in the same stanza. His love of jazz is the bedrock upon which layers of upbeat rock & pop are built. Hip-hop outcrops jut out of a vast landscape entrenched with deep roots of homegrown folk singers; both featuring poetry filled with simultaneous melancholy & inspiration. His sober, somber explorations of truth & turmoil do not depress, but uplift and illuminate like a beacon of hope. Kellers solo debut, Face Light is 12 tracks of raw, pure, spirit & soul. Ethan Keller is a Midwest pioneer. Writing since age 9, touring since 13, and promoting since 18, Keller built a scene in his southeastern Wisconsin hometown, quickly permeated the Milwaukee sound, and then took to the road. Since 1995, he has sold over 6000 albums and made over 1000 appearances in 35 states, including many prestigious venues & industry showcases (SXSW, NACA, NEMO, EATM, MFNW, MMC). Winning Jim Beam National Band Search in 2001 and sharing the stage with a plethora of diverse acts (Glenn Tilbrook, Night Ranger, Umphreys McGee, Better than Ezra, Lucky Boys Confusion), performances on national T.V. (MTV, Jenny Jones), and the relentless perseverance on the road, continually increase Ethan Kellers outreach.
