The Lipsticks and Hollus

07/04/2009 9:00 PM

The Pink Lipsticks are one of the Midwest's new and upcoming bands. They hail from the Bratwurst capital of the world, Sheboygan, WI. They easily grab the attention of music lovers and venues wherever they play. Drawing crowds, and fans, they've started to pack bars and small clubs. With many years of experience under their belts, they are geared up and ready to rock their way to the top!

The band consists of four Lipsticks.

Mike Willis – Mike is the founding member of The Pink Lipsticks and you will find him playing the guitar, keyboard, and singing lead vocals in the band. He has been writing music since a child. In high school he joined and contributed to a band called Buzzkill, a band way beyond it’s age. Mike also formed The Barbecue Band and as he went to college, joined The Cool Waters Band. From 1996 to 1999, The Cool Waters Band packed various venues, before packing their bags for Colorado. And after a few years Mike eventually left the band and moved to L.A. to attend film school. While in L.A he worked on numerous soundtracks and films. Now back in his hometown, Mike is back on familiar grounds with family and friends guiding him. He formed The Pink Lipsticks and is ready to rock the Midwest once again!

Tony DePagter – Tony has been playing music for over 20 years. He plays the bass guitar in The Pink Lipsticks, and carries a voice that has rocked the countryside all the way from Chicago to New York City. He has also been a crowd pleaser in everyway possible.

Bob Schmidt – Bob has been playing guitar since the age of 17. He has been in bands such as Sidecar & Waterlounge. Waterlounge is where Bob made a lot of noise in the 7 years the band was together. He has recorded 2 records, played over 200 shows, and packed venues all over the Midwest. Bob is a current member of the bands Magic Missile and Uncle Meat, where Bob is lead singer in both. However, his true passion is the Pink Lipsticks and the launching of the band.

Ryan Brown – Ryan has been playing drums since the age of nineteen and pulsates The Pink Lipsticks with his talent. The self-taught drummer has played in a variety of bands such as: Transparent Envelope, William Indian, Second Hand (a Germany Based Band), and Otter. Ryan is also a current member of the bands Magic Missile and Sirens of Titans. With being involved in so many bands, he is a true entertainer. Ryan has recorded 3 records thus far and is poised to make The Pink Lipsticks band rise to the top!

The first time Hollus went out and spent a couple years building a buzz around Chicago, there was this consistent line that someone (be it another musician or club owner or audience member) would drop.

“Guys these young shouldn’t be this good.”

Or something to that effect.
I forget who first said it, and really, it isn’t that important. Despite local, state and federal courts opinions otherwise, age ain’t nothing but a number. Can you be in your early 20s and play blues like someone who’s spent 40 years in dive bars around the city doing it? Is the pain genuine? Is the drive real? How can it be truly honest?

And isn’t it funny that authenticity comes into question so frequently in the age of American Idol, 99-cent pop hits and an industry under threat of takeover by the goddamned Disney Channel?

“I’d rather have us fuck up the vision than anybody else,” says frontman Jamison Acker.

Dave Steffan and Craig Nauser

07/09/2009 9:00 PM

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Dave began playing guitar as a young boy, showing unusual talent even at a very early age. By the time he left high school, his band was signed to Scepter Records. Within five years, he had also released recordings with RCA and Mercury Records. His talent as a songwriter and singer, in addition to his prowess as a guitar player, earned Steffen and his band special recognition in Billboard and Cashbox magazines and the Gavin Report.

Craig Neuser - Vocals/Bass/Harmonica Craig is a very talented musician who is also a part of the Dave Steffen Band. Craig brings youthful energy to the band. His vocals are soulful and bluesy, reminiscent of Greg Alman and BB King. He also hosts Tuesday night open mics at The green Room

Cedarwell

07/10/2009 9:00 PM

Just before the morning, while the nervous sun hesitates beyond the horizon, Cedarwell wakes up at the bottom of the ocean. Slowly gasping for a breath and swimming towards the surface Joel Philip Stokdyk (drums, percussion, harmonica) realizes they are far away from home. Erik G. Neave (acoustic guitar, voice) gets sucked up behind him and grabs a glossy tuft of seaweed peeking out from a slit of darkness and screams up to his shrinking partner "I will never let go. I can never let go."

The Steepwater Band

07/18/2009 9:00 PM

The Steepwater Band formed in Chicago in 1998 ignited by a passion for the city's electric blues. The power trio who quickly progressed from covering Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker to writing compelling originals has crafted a rock n' roll sound best described as heavy Americana. For a decade the band has gigged relentlessly, performing nearly 125 shows per year and bringing their songbook of gritty Delta blues, soulful boogie, and backwoods psychedelia to audiences across the States and abroad.

The creative energy of the band's live shows has earned them a loyal fan base and critical acclaim. Jeff Massey performs with a passion that can belie his virtuosity. His masterful guitar work, often featuring slide, has won the respect of many modern guitar luminaries. The rhythm section's rock-solid interplay provides a foundation which liberates Massey's lead work: Joe Winters swings beats with total command of his ferocity while Tod Bowers rolls out bass lines with the loose-boogie sensibility of Ronnie Lane and a knack for carrying the melody. Years of musical collaboration allow the band to play together tautly without sacrificing spontaneity.
