Loyal Opposition
09/06/2009 6:00 PM

The Loyal Opposition, one of Sheboygan’s seminal rock bands, returns to the stage Sunday, September 6 at The Green Room Pub. This second annual reunion performance will begin at 7:00 p.m.
Reuniting once again are all of the bands original members: Carl Weinberger, guitar and vocals; Rick Gustafson, guitar and vocals; Mike Eubank, bass and vocals; Greg Rakun, keyboards; and Steve Hofschield, drums.
In addition to The Loyal Opposition’s own original material, this historic one-set show will feature songs by The Doors, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Iron Butterfly, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and Traffic.
Formed in the summer of 1967, The Loyal Opposition began as a top-40 cover band with a play list of more than 100 songs. The band was immediately very popular and had a busy schedule performing at teen dances and bars throughout Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan. In Sheboygan, the band was a mainstay at the YMCA, Armory, CYO dances, and bars (The Patio, Club 23, The Rendezvous).
The band was very much a product of the late 1960s. During the course of the bands two-year existence, it gradually developed a heavier, underground sound and became known for its extended, improvised jams.
In early 1969, the band released its only 45-rpm record, Telling Lies, Love Has Come Your Way, both composed by Carl Weinberger.
An August 1969 farewell concert at the Sheboygan Armory (along with The Royals and Elite Society) marked the end of the road for the band. At the time it disbanded, The Loyal Opposition was at the peak of its popularity and was influential both locally and state-wide.
For the past forty years, all of the bands members have remained musically active, playing in numerous rock bands, dance bands, jazz bands, orchestras, and as solo artists.
